How It Works

Introduction

Rhinocery is a tool to help you optimise your grocery shopping. It does this by finding the cheapest way to buy the items you want. But it does this in a new way. Instead of you scrolling through results one by one and selecting items that you want, you instead search for everything at once and deselect items that you don't want. This reduces the amount of time spent looking for items and the habit of buying more than you need.

Step 1: Enter Your Shopping List

Start by entering your shopping list on the home page. Enter one item per line in the text area.

Enter shopping list

You can input free-form text. It can handle spelling mistakes but you will get better results if you are more descriptive.

Step 2: Review Search Results

After submitting your list, you'll see matching products from different stores. Each product will show:

  • Product name and description
  • Lowest Price
  • Store availability
  • Any special offers
Search results

You can click on each product to see more details.

Step 3: Deselect What You Don't Want

For each item on your list, deselect the products you're not interested in by clicking the green box. You can select multiple options per item to give the optimizer more choices.

Select products

The products that you exclude will not be considered in the optimisation.

The idea is to deselect products that you won't buy so you would be happy with whatever is left.

Step 4: Choose Optimization Strategy

Choose how you want to optimize your shopping:

  • Best Value: Finds the best price per unit (e.g. per kg or per litre)

Currently this is the only strategy available but more will be added in the future.

Optimization options

Then click Optimise.

Step 5: View Optimized Results

Review your optimized shopping list, which shows:

  • Which products to buy from each store
  • Total cost per store
  • Overall savings
